Under The Sun Garden Centers

  • What type of franchise is available?

  • Under the Sun offers you the opportunity to operate an Under the Sun franchise, which provides annuals, perennials, tropicals, hanging baskets and supplies as well as gardening related décor and accessories through a retail store.
  • How much will I need to invest?

The estimated initial investments to establish an Under the Sun franchise will be between $212,500 to $913,350 and is variant upon location. This includes a franchise fee of $40,000, as well as the necessary build-out, inventory, décor, and startup costs associated with your gardening center.
  • What is the royalty fee?

The royalty fee covers the ongoing support services that you will receive as an Under the Sun franchisee, as well as entitling you to the use of the Under the Sun service marks, proprietary business system and marketing assistance. The fee is 6% of your weekly sales.
  • How much money can I make with an Under the Sun Garden Center?

The Federal Trade Commission regulates what Under the Sun is allowed to disclose to franchisees. As you proceed through the process of purchasing a garden center, you will receive the Uniform Franchise Offering Circular that includes information about the gross sales, cost of goods sold and payroll costs from our two permanent locations as well as guidelines for other expenses.
  • How do I learn about all the plants?

Plant material is the center piece of Under the Sun Garden Centers. We have developed a training program that has been in use at our corporate locations and which we have tailored for our franchisees to educate everyone regardless of their existing knowledge and experience with plants. Our experience shows that most of our best employees and managers had no previous knowledge.
  • How do I know what to buy?

Knowing what to order and when to order is one of the focuses of our training and support. We provide you with an inventory plan for each of the four seasons that is tailored to your market with timelines, vendors, recommended quantities, care and maintenance, and the display guidelines.
  • How big of a location do I need?

There are two components to the store. The physical building should be between 2,500 and 4,000 square feet and will be utilized for home and garden décor items, florist grade tropical plant material, some indoor annual plant display, and the checkout area. The outdoor retail area is the main display for your plant material inventory, which drives traffic through your garden center. The location must have between 7,000 and 12,000 square feet of available space to be used for plant display, some of which will be open air and some of which will be under a permanent shade structure.
  • What do I look for in choosing a location?

Gardening is a very visual business. Our plant displays are colorful and vibrant and are the calling card that draws people into the store due to our street side displays. For this reason, potential locations must have heavy traffic with the building being offset from the road to allow for adequate space between the road and the building. This open space will be used for our plant display bench units which will hold the plant inventory. We will assist you with additional information for selection and negotiating for the right location.
  • Why do people go to Under the Sun when Wal-Mart, Lowe’s and Home Depot have garden centers?

Under the Sun has two components that our customers rely upon when coming to us. Customer service in a relaxing and enjoyable atmosphere creates a loyalty with our customers who enjoy interacting with a company and team that is as passionate about gardening as they are. Equally as important is providing the highest quality plants that look great from the day they arrive at our store to the day they are planted by the customer. Buying the right products and nurturing them is a large part of what separates Under the Sun from the big box retailers who have gardening as one of their product centers.
  • Will I have an exclusive territory?

Yes, each franchisee is granted an exclusive territory for operating your gardening center. The territory will usually be a radius of 3 miles around your location. A report on your desired territory will be provided.
